Homemade Mocha Mix
If you love Mocha, especially the kind you get in stick sachets, such as Nescafe Menu Mocha, you will love this homemade mocha mix.
It’s so simple to make, keeps for ages in an airtight container, and best of all costs a fraction to make compared with the prepackaged sachets.
What is mocha mix?
For those unfamiliar with mocha mix, it’s basic a powdered, chocolate flavoured coffee. Our mocha mix recipe contains powdered milk, which means you don’t need to add fresh milk to your mocha!
This makes the mixture perfect for using even when you don’t have fresh milk on hand, for example when camping or when packing a picnic. All you need is some of your powdered mocha mix packed in a small container, and a thermos filled with hot water.
What are the ingredients in mocha mix?
The ingredients that you need to make a homemade mocha mix are all pretty simple, and there is a good chance you already have them in the pantry. You will need:
- Instant coffee powder
- Cocoa powder
- Sugar
- Milk powder
- Vanilla extract
How to store mocha mix
Simple store your homemade mocha mix in an airtight container at room temperature and it will keep for at least several months.
Why make this mocha mix recipe?
Sure, you could buy mocha mix already pre-made from the supermarket. But why buy it pre-made when it’s so quick and easy to make a batch yourself?
Making your own mocha mix has two benefits. First of all, you know exactly what’s in it. When you buy it in those little sachet sticks from the supermarket, the ingredients list is long and filled with ‘ingredients’ that most people wouldn’t recognise.
When you make it yourself from scratch, you know exactly what ingredients are in the homemade mocha, and you can tailor the recipe to suit any dietary requirements you might have.
Secondly, it’s so much cheaper to make it yourself than buy it pre-made. It’s cheaper again to make it yourself when compared with buying a mocha-to-go from your local cafe. Invest in a travel mug and you can even make a homemade mocha for the journey to work. Make a batch of lemon poppyseed muffins to go with the mocha and you have the perfect on-the-run morning tea.
Is it cheaper to make mocha mix than buy it?
We have included our costings below, but an 18g pre packaged stick costs $0.65 when purchased in a pack of 20, compared with $0.15 for the same amount using our recipe. That’s a saving of $0.50 per serving, which is huge!
30g instant coffee (International Roast brand) – $0.71
50g cocoa powder – $0.58
100g sugar – $0.10
110g milk powder – $0.71
1 teaspoon vanilla extract – $0.29
Total $2.39 for 30g, or $0.15 per 18g (approx 2 tablespoon) serving
How to make homemade mocha mix
Making this homemade mocha mix couldn’t be simpler. Add the instant coffee powder, cocoa powder, sugar, milk powder and vanilla extract to the bowl of a food processor.
Process until all ingredients are well combined, then transfer to an airtight container. This mocha mixture can be made in a bowl by hand, but a food processor does an amazing job of combining the ingredients and processing the granules of each of the ingredients to much the same size.
