Homemade LCM Bars
LCM bars are popular with kids, but as with all prepackaged treats, they are not cheap! Our Homemade LCM Bars are a fraction of the price to make, and will only take you a minute or two to mix together. They are as simple as melting butter and marshmallows in the microwave, and mixing through the rice bubbles.
We have compared the costs of buying the prepackaged version of LCMs with the homemade version. The cost of our ingredients was (Coles online prices):
- 240g rice bubbles (generic brand) $1.22
- 125g butter $0.74
- 250g marshmallows $2.60
The total ingredient cost came to $4.56, and this made 27 bars weighing 22g each. Each bar therefore cost $0.17. Compare this to the cost of LCM bars at $0.72, also weighing 22g each ($4.30 for a 6 pack).
We decorated our bars with sprinkles, although we have left this out of our costing as they are optional. You could leave yours plain, or try sprinkling with chocolate chips or desiccated coconut.
- 240g rice bubbles
- 125g butter
- 250g marshmallows
Line a slice tin with baking paper.
In a large bowl, melt the marshmallows in the microwave, this should take around 20-30 seconds. Melt the butter in a separate bowl.

Pour the mixture into the slice tin and press down firmly with the back of a metal spoon. Add sprinkles at this point if using.
Place in the fridge to set before slicing.
