Day 8 – Find free family activities

It can be expensive to keep the family entertained, activities like play centres and going to the movies can add up fast, especially if you have a big family.  Doing the 30 Day No Spend Challenge doesn’t mean you have to be stuck at home all month. There are plenty of free activities out there, you just need to think outside the box.

What’s in your local area will depend on where you live, but here in Adelaide there are some fantastic new playgrounds popping up all over the place, with excellent picnic facilities.  Playgrounds make a great day out, you can pack a lunch picnic or some snacks and the kids can play, all for free!  You could even choose a day to go park hopping, where you visit as many playgrounds as you can in once day.  If it’s hot, rather than paying for the local swimming pool you could visit the beach if you have one nearby.

Going to the cinemas is fun, but it is an extremely expensive activity these days, especially If you buy snacks and drinks as well.  Instead, keep an eye out for free community outdoor movie nights.  Libraries usually have a great collection of the latest DVD’s, and all for free.  Rather than buy DVD’s, become a library member if you haven’t already, and log into your libraries online catalogue.  You are no likely to find the latest new release movies sitting o the shelf, so from here, you should be able to search movies and put a hold request on any you want to borrow.  Once your selection is available, you can then collect it from your library.

There is likely to be a website for your local town or city focused on kids and family activities, just search your city name and either kids or families.  From here, you should be able to find any free events that are on each weekend and school holidays.

Here is a list of ideas to get you started:

  • Fly a kite if it’s a windy day
  • Head to a free museum or art gallery
