Day 11 – Socialise on a budget

Just because you are on a no spend challenge, it doesn’t mean you have to sit at home doing nothing day after day.  It’s still possible to get out of the house and socialise, you just need to plan ahead.  Meeting up with friends or family for a meal on a regular basis can blow the budget very quickly, even a simple cup of coffee and cake can be expensive.

It helps if you share with others the fact that you are taking part in the 30 Day No Spend Challenge, hopefully your friends and family will get on board and take part in some more frugal activities.  Depending on who you are socialising with, there are plenty of free alternatives that are just as good, if not better than meeting up for a meal or coffee.  It helps if you are the one initiating the get together, that way you can plan the activity to be something that fits your budget.

If there are kids involved playgrounds can be great places to meet up.  You have the playground to keep the kids entertained, and you can then have a picnic lunch or snack afterward.  You can even take a thermos or travel cup filled with coffee to the park, rather than being tempted to buy coffee nearby.  In summer you could meet up at the beach, for a swim and sand play followed by a picnic.

Rather than head to an expensive restaurant for dinner, host a dinner party and get everyone to bring along a course.  That way everyone shares the cost of the food, rather than the entertaining bill falling on just the one person.  It’s also a good idea to get everyone to bring their own alcoholic drinks in this situation.  You could even make these theme nights, such as movie night or board games night.

Of course sometimes it’s ok to spend money on socialising, especially if it’s a special occasion.  It’s when it becomes a regular thing to spend large amounts of money every weekend that your finances will worse off.  If you have been invited out for dinner at a restaurant, such as for a family member’s birthday, you can always find ways to save money eating out, such as Entertainment Book vouchers and sticking to water rather than expensive drinks.
